Overview

Our internet browsers are the main portal through which we access the internet. We need to either ensure we review the security settings of our chosen browser or we are use a secure browser like BRAVE.

Note: if you want to negate the need to perform tasks (1) and (2) below, just use a secure browser like BRAVE. Give it a try here!

 


 

ONE. Tighten your internet browser settings.

a. If you use Internet Explorer, uninstall it and pick either Safari, Firefox and Chrome.

 

b. Review your privacy and security settings.

  • Safari: Safari > Preferences > Security and Safari > Preferences > Privacy
  • Firefox: Tools > Options > Privacy & Security
  • Chrome: More Settings > Advanced > Privacy & Security

 

d. Opt-Out of Tracking – when in your privacy and security settings ensure you turn on ‘Do Not Track’ or turn off ‘Tracking’.

 

e. Stop your browser sending location data;

  • Safari: Preferences > Privacy, disable location services.
  • Firefox: Type “about:config” in the URL bar, then “geo.enabled”. Double-click to disable.
  • Chrome: Preferences > Settings > Advanced > Content settings, and deny sites tracking your physical location.

 

f. Limit the use of plug-in’s where you can (some are useful, but many are inherently vulnerable).

 


 

TWO. Install the ‘HTTPS Everywhere’ plug-in.

a. Google it for your specific browser, e.g. “HTTPS Everywhere for Chrome”. Install the plug-in.

 

 


 

THREE. Setup Quad9 Protection (optional).

a. Quad9 filters internet traffic through police servers to ensure an added level of protection.

  • macOS: System Preferences > Network Settings > Advanced > DNS. Click the ‘+’ sign and add 9.9.9.9 to the top of the list. Click OK and then Apply.
  • Windows: Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings. Right-click the network connected to the internet and select Properties.
    • Select Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).
    • Select “Use the following DNS server addresses” and enter 9.9.9.9 into the Preferred DNS server box. For an Alternative DNS server enter 149.112.112.112.
