Overview

Due to the increasing threat against our mobile devices, we should ensure we have secure screen locks enabled and that they’re setup to automatically download the latest security updates.

DETAILED HOW-TO INSTRUCTIONS

How-to Instructions

ONE. Setup secure screen locks.

a. Enable fingerprint or face recognition screen unlocking on your smartphone.

  • iOS: Settings > Face/Touch ID & Passcode.
  • Android: Open Settings > Lock Screen and Security > Screen Lock Type > Biometrics

 

b. Review security settings on your smartphone and ensure you have a Pin of 6 characters or longer.

  • iOS: Settings > Face/Touch ID & Passcode.
  • Android: Settings > Security & location > Screen lock

 

c. Set screen auto-lock settings to kick in after 2-3 minutes of inactivity.

  • iOS: Settings > Display & Brightness
  • macOS: System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Require password immediately after sleep or screen saver begins, and System Preferences > Energy Saver > Turn display off after 2-3 mins.
  • Android: Settings > Security & location > Screen lock > Settings
  • Windows: No action needed (by default the lock screen times out your screen after 1 minute)

 


 

TWO. Setup automatic software updates.

a. Set your device to automatically check and install OS updates.

  • iOS: Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates (On).
  • macOS: System Preferences > Software Update > Automatically keep mac up to date.
  • Android: Android should auto-update by default. To check you have the latest version go to System > Advanced > System update (If you don’t see ‘Advanced’, tap ‘About phone’).
  • Windows: by default it periodically checks for OS updates but perform a one off check now... Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
