What Are The 3 Most Important Tasks To Stay Safe Online?

Go Back

As members of SimpleCyberLife.com know, there are about 7 or 8 key tasks that we recommend are performed to ensure that your family can use the internet safely online. We have them in our Protection checklists and are members can tick them off as they complete them, seeing their progress as they go.

But parents are busy people and sometimes there just isn't the time to get all the protection in place at once. So, a common question we get asked is what are the absolute top 3 must-haves we should have right now?

Well consider your question answered 🙂 The three protections below are the absolute must-haves that every family should have to ensure they stay safe online.

1. Social Media Privacy Settings

Almost everyone has social media profiles nowadays and the number one source of identity theft, financial fraud and other cyber attacks and scams is the over-sharing of personal data online. We can help prevent the wrong people getting their hands on our personal data by restricting the privacy settings of our social media profiles.

Your Tasks;

1. Review privacy settings for all social media sites you (and your kids) have.

2. Disable smartphone geotagging on photos.

3. Review historic posts (photos, videos and comments) for sensitive info.

4. Following some simple rules to stay safe.

2. Anti-Virus Software

Another must-have is anti-virus software. Many people believe that some devices don't need anti-virus or that if they just don't click on suspicious emails and links they can't get viruses on their devices. Unfortunately, this isn't the case at all. Things called 'Internet Worms' can just find your devices and burrow into them straight from the internet without any action on your part. And yes, Mac's need anti-virus, they are not immune!

Your Tasks;

1. Install a decent anti-virus software.

2. Learn how to spot a phishing email.

3. Password Manager

You may not even have heard of a password manager...but they are now absolutely essential! Why? They enable us to have a unique, long and complex password for each online account we have. Having the same password for every online account is the number one no no because once you get one account hacked (likely) you've lost all of them. Nightmare.

Using a password manager takes all the stress out of remembering and using passwords.

Your Tasks;

1. Use passphrases, not passwords.

2. Use a password manager.

3. Follow my Passphrase Golden Rules.
